Time flies when you are having fun and we cannot believe a year has past already since the Rio 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
The Rio Olympic Games (5-21 August 2016) concluded last August and we were proud to once again organise the “National Welcome Home Celebrations” for our Australian Olympic Team on their return to Australia. What an honour and exciting times to be able to bring our sporting heroes to Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, Brisbane, Hobart, Perth and Canberra for numerous events celebrating the green and gold in our communities.
And what a great recognition of our team's work, to see the Australian Olympic Team National Welcome Home Celebrations 2016 on the National Finalist list of the Australian Event Awards for 2017. The celebrations were nominated by industry experts as one of the best events in QLD, the ACT, SA, TAS and WA respectively. Organising Australia’s Olympic “National Welcome Home Celebrations” has been a highlight for our Sold Out Team for 20 years. Rio 2016 was the sixth consecutive time the Australian Olympic Committee (AOC) engaged Sold Out to deliver these events. They are a proud part of our Games legacy, which also includes involvement in the Sydney 2000, Salt Lake City 2002, Athens 2004, Beijing 2008 and London 2012 Games.
Having been part of the Olympic movement for over 25 years now, has given us the opportunity to build great networks and form some amazing and long-lasting relation- and friendships. We also had close-ties with Rio 2016 and our in-house celebrations were huge, when our Project Manager Matt Cooper’s wife, dual Olympian Chloe Esposito, won Gold in the Modern Pentathlon.
Plus, our sponsorship specialist Edwina was a part of the Rio bid pre-games, while our communications manager Cora spent five months in Rio as one of the Organising Committee’s Venue Media Managers at the stunning Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas rowing and canoe sprint venue, where Kim Brennan took home a gold medal in the women’s single.
Already in the lead up to the Games, we were closely involved in some of the athletes’ preparation, including Sold Out delivering the international men’s water polo exhibition match between Australia and the subsequent bronze medallists Italy at "Water Polo by the Sea" in Sydney Harbour on 19 Dec 2015. Water Polo By the Sea was awarded "Best New Event" at the 2016 Australian Event Awards.
And only in February this year, we had the chance to support some of the world's best Rio stars at Athletics Australia’s Nitro Athletics event, including the Usain Bolt All-stars team.
Subsequently, Nitro Athletics has been nominated as a 2017 Australian Event Awards Finalist, plus is a nominee for the Australia’s Favourite Event. Public voting is currently ongoing via www.eventawards.com.au Show your support and vote now!
The excitement never stops and the Winter Games in PyeongChang, South Korea are only a few months away with Tokyo 2020 and more “Welcome Home” celebrations on the horizon too.
The Winter Games will be a great lead-in into Australia’s 2018 sporting highlight, the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games in April. As the GC2018 Official Event Management Company, we cannot wait to share the dream and replicate some of the Games atmosphere at our “Home Games” as well as at the Queen’s Baton Relay next year. Get excited!
